Hello and welcome to the family! Here at The Trampery our aim is to support a thriving entrepreneurial community through a diverse mix of people from many sectors, and a dynamic events programme. So settle in, get comfortable and let’s make your business bloom.

About The Trampery

In 2009, The Trampery opened Shoreditch’s very first startup workspace. Since then the company has continued to pioneer new kinds of environments for entrepreneurship and innovation. We have opened nine sites across London to date, and currently operate five other sites The Trampery Old Street, The Trampery Republic, The Trampery on the Gantry, The Trampery Fish Island Village and The Trampery Tottenham.

How to get here

The nearest stations are:

Bromley By Bow (Underground Station) | 0.6 Miles | 14 minute walk

Exit the station and head South along the A12 following the footpath. Take a left onto Lochnagar Street and then your first right onto Bromley Hall Road. This will lead you to the front door of Poplar Works

Langdon Park (DLR Station) | 0.5 Miles | 10 minute walk

Come out of the DLR station and head North - East, walking diagonally through Langdon Park. Once you exit the park, turn right onto Zetland Street, cross over the A12 and Zetland Street will turn into Lochnagar Street. Take your first left onto Bromley Hall Road which will lead you to the front of the building.

About Poplar Works

Poplar Works is a partnership between Poplar HARCA, London College of Fashion, UAL and The Trampery, supported by the Mayor of London and part of the Fashion District.

Fashion has a vital role to play in ensuring the sustainability of our planet – but the issues around it can be complex and hard to tackle at the same time as managing a business.

Fashion has a special place in East London’s story. It’s been a major economic and cultural player for over a century. But as our city changes around us, so do the challenges we face. There is a chronic lack of affordable workspace, employment patterns are changing, and the skills we need to succeed are constantly evolving.

Poplar Works is part of a wider network of sites and organisations across East London that will help our industry to grow and innovate in a way that supports businesses, communities, and the city as a whole. This drive to support the growth of the fashion industry in the capital is being led by the Fashion District. As fashion businesses become key parts of East London’s economy, local people and communities should be part of this success story.

New networks and connections will be fundamental to this success. By combining studios and workshops alongside training, enterprise programmes, and manufacturing, Poplar Works will support a growing and diverse network. A network of entrepreneurs, trainees, students, amateurs, and mentors, which brings local together with global, and connects time-honoured crafts with new technologies.

On Site Partnerships

London College of Fashion, UAL is working in partnership with Newham College to deliver a Fashion Production training programme in a brand new ‘Making for Change’ studio at Poplar Works. This training will provide students with an understanding and knowledge of garment construction techniques, used in the industry to build confidence, skills and professional experience. Making for Change is a fully-equipped workshop that produces to an industry standard across a wide range of products including daywear, accessories and homeware.

Established by the Ministry of Justice and London College of Fashion, UAL in 2014, Making for Change started in a women’s prison. The project aimed to increase well-being and reduce reoffending rates by equipping participants with professional skills and qualifications within a supportive environment. The programme is still operating in HMP Downview.

Making for Change is expanding to a purpose-built design and manufacturing hub at Poplar Works. The Making for Change hub will offer professional production services as well as training programmes. The production programme will offer work experience and potential employment opportunities to graduates of the training programmes.

There are also 5 shared and solo studios assigned to designers from the Centre for Fashion Enterprise (CFE). CFE is London's pioneering fashion and fashion tech business incubator and part of London College of Fashion (LCF), a constituent college of University of the Arts London (UAL). Successful applicants are provided studio space for 2 years which ensures a longevity of support, enabling businesses to go through transitional shifts in a supported environment with the assurance of right-time intervention. As part of their application process, they were required to provide a plan of support to members of the Poplar Works and local community. These will range from workshops to employment opportunities and events held in the space.

Communications

Wifi & Broadband

Broadband is provided in all studios and Wifi runs throughout the building. We also recommend using your LAN connection in your studios for optimum performance. The current network is set up with the following details below. Your personal wifi is provided by your House Manager when you join and is unique for each studio. You can find your network information in your studio or please contact your House Manager.

Printing

The printer is located in the Paisley Room and can offer both A4 and A3 printing in B&W and Colour. To print you need to set up an account and follow the instructions here. Printing works on a credit system and new members are gifted 50credits when joining us. You can top up your account under Products and Services in your account.

Newsletters

We will add you to The Trampery Poplar Works mailing list which means you will be signed up to receive an email newsletter every Monday which includes updates about the space, events, and member news. If you want us to include something in the newsletter just let us know!

Nexudus

All members will be required to set up a profile on our members platform, Nexudus. This system provides us with a centralised space for many aspects of member communications, including:

Member onboarding - data collection, license agreements, sign online compatible
Invoice payments and renewal reminders
Visitor notifications
Event listings and purchasing of event tickets
Newsletter and community blog updates

General, although very important!

License Agreement

All members of The Trampery must sign a license agreement in order to use the facilities. This provides the legal basis on which the space can be enjoyed and it is provided with this guide. The license is based on a fixed term or periodically from the date shown with billing running in line with this.

Notice must be given as stated in the license.

Payment

All payments must be made before the first day of the license period. The Trampery will send out invoices 14 days in advance via Nexudus and the invoice is required to be paid on the 1st of each occupation period. Access to the space and services may be restricted if balances are not paid on time.

Utilities

All licensed studios are responsible for the electric utilities in the studio and a small proportion of the common areas. This includes the lighting in social spaces, toilet facilities and walkways. Heating in studios which contain radiators are inclusive. Meter readings will be taken monthly.

Studio Alterations

If you would like to make any alterations to your studio, whether it be decorative or the addition of any fixtures and fittings into the walls, written consent must be acquired by The Trampery. You can find more information and fill out a Studio Alteration Application Form here. Contact your House Manager if you have any questions.

Waste Management and Bin Storage

Our waste is managed by Quantum Waste, who hand sort our rubbish to ensure that the maximum amount gets recycled. There are two recycling streams; food waste and everything else. The bins in the common areas are labelled accordingly and when disposing of your studio waste please use the correct bin within the bin stores. Please ensure that you use clear plastic bags when throwing your waste away as they do not sort waste in black bags.

There are 3 bin stores, one between Blocks A and B, one between Block B and C and one next to studio 1 over in The Makery.

Heating

For studios with radiators, the heating can be controlled via the dial on the radiator itself and is set to be on between mid September & March.

Keys and Fobs

An initial £30 refundable deposit will be taken for your first studio key and access fob.You will also receive a mailbox, and bin store key when moving in. Any additional key/fob will require a further £30 deposit.

Paisley Room

The Paisley Room is above the cafe and it is a space for all members to come, relax and hang out in. This is where you will find your House Manager, the printer and sweet treats! The code to enter into the Paisley Room is 3468.

Bike Storage

There are 2 bike stores, one between Block A and B and another between Block B and C. Let us know which bike store you would prefer to store your bike in.

Parking

There is no on street parking available for members. If you require a parking space, Poplar HARCA can allocate a designated bay in a car park that is a 5 minute walk from Poplar Works. Rental prices are currently £26.03 per week for your own bay. You can find more information here.

Lifts

We have 2 lifts on site, one in Block A stairwell near the cafe and one in Block B stairwell. When using the lift, if it is to transport goods, you can place items in the lift, close the door and call it from the other floor by pressing the button. If you plan to use the lift for accessibility reasons, close the door behind you and hold down the button of the floor you are travelling to. The perimeter of the lift is highly sensitive, if the lift detects anything at the edge that could become trapped, it will stop. To prevent any entrapments, ensure you keep yourself and your belongings away from the edge. If you do become trapped, press the ‘bell’ button and that will directly contact an engineer. If you are also carrying your phone, alert your House Manager.

Kitchens

There are fully equipped kitchens in your block with tea, coffee, milk and sugar provided by The Trampery. These kitchens are located in Block B first floor, Block C and Block D and have a fridge, microwave and toilet facilities. Block B also contains 2 washing machines. There is also the Paisley Room above the cafe where you can come to relax, have lunch and catch up with the rest of the Poplar Works community.

The Works Café

The cafe is being operated by Josh and the team! They serve up all the classics, along with a full vegan range. Members get 10% off their order - click here for the menu.

Post and Deliveries

We cannot take deliveries at Poplar Works. Members are required to have their packages delivered directly to their studio. The majority of the studios are on the street level with a post box and numbered on the doors. However for the first floor studios and Making for Change unit, post boxes are installed next to the Block A stairs. For small items the postman or courier can access them via the cafe door. However for larger items, we ask you to add a contact telephone number to their order so they can be contacted by the courier.

Visitors

At Poplar Works we do not have a dedicated reception area to welcome guests into the building. Visitors for ground floor studios can proceed directly to the business that they are there to see. All visitors that need access to the upper floors are required to be collected from the Cafe by the member they wish to see. The Trampery House Manager will assist if needed to contact the member on behalf of the visitor. If the member can not be contacted the visitor will not be allowed past the Cafe and communal areas. If a member is expecting a guest but knows they will not be able to collect them from the Cafe themselves please inform The House Manager in advance so that they can escort the visitor to the correct studio.

COVID-19 Procedures

Emergency Procedures

First Aid

There are first aid boxes located in the cafe, Block B, C and D tea point. Each business located in a studio is responsible to ensure they have their own first aider.

There are first aiders on site, if you require assistance please speak with a team member.

Fire and Emergency Evacuation

Please ensure you read through this and all your team members have read through and are clear on the closest exit point and the location of the meeting point.

On hearing the Fire Alarm:

Evacuate the building immediately.
Leave the building by your nearest fire exit, closing doors behind you.
Do NOT stop to collect belongings or finish off a task.
If your normal exit is blocked – leave by an alternative one.
Do not use the lift.
Walk and do not run.
On arrival at the assembly point (PAVED AREA OUTSIDE THE WORKS CAFE), ensure that you give your name to the designated Fire Marshal.
Do not return to the building until you are told it is safe to do so by the Fire Brigade, the House Manager or the designated Fire Marshal.

On discovering a Fire

Raise the alarm immediately by pressing one of the break glass units next to all fire doors across the building. Evacuate the building by the closest exit.

Individuals with Disabilities

It is essential you have a personal evacuation plan (PEP) in place. Please arrange for this to be done as soon as you start working in the building. Please ensure one is carried out for any visitors with disabilities. Please ask the House Manager if you require guidance. Refuge areas are located on 1st and 2nd floors at the top of each staircase, wait in this area and call for assistance if you are unable to exit the building in the event of an evacuation.

Fire Alarm

We have a weekly fire alarm which goes off between 9am - 10am every Wednesday. Please do not evacuate the building if the alarm goes off during this time unless the alarm rings for over 2 minutes solidly.

Never return to the building unless the House Manager, fire warden, the person in charge that shift approves re-entry.

Members are strongly advised to take out personal contents insurance

Members are also advised to procure secure storage for high value items
If you require anything in the process of taking out personal contents insurance, please contact your House Manager who will be more than happy to help and advise.
